Toxic Toothpaste Ingredients You Need To Avoid: Engine Degreaser? Rat Poison Anyone?

May 10, 2017

Would you allow yourself or your family to brush your teeth with engine degreaser or rat poison?  The fact is, you probably are and don’t even know it!

Dental hygiene products like toothpastes and mouthwashes that you and your family use everyday, may contain toxins that have been linked to cancer, blindness and even death! Do you know what ingredients are in your dental hygiene products?  If you don’t, you may want to check the ingredients right now.

You may think, what harm can a little toothpaste do?  A little bit of toothpaste at least twice a day every single day can really add up! Even if you spit most of it out, some the chemicals it may contain, will have already entered your bloodstream.  After all, your mouth is one of the most absorbent places in your body.  It’s the gateway to every system in your body.

Many major toothpaste brands have these harmful chemicals loaded in their products.  All of these common ingredients have been known to be harmful to humans.

4 TOXIC TOOTHPASTE INGREDIENTS:

1. Triclosan

Triclosan is a chemical used for its antibacterial properties.  It’s an ingredient found in many detergents, hand sanitisers, makeup and toothpastes. While the companies that manufacture products containing triclosan claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a dangerous pesticide.  The chemical has been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance and endocrine (hormones) disruptors.  Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls, and undescended testicles in boys.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

SLS is a chemical responsible for the foaming action that gives the impression that the product is working.  However, SLS has been linked to skin irritations and painful mouth ulcers. Though the main problem is in the way this chemical is manufactured. The manufacturing process also releases carcinogenic volatile organic compounds into the environment. Cancer!

SLS is also registered as an insecticide and may have toxic effects to marine life, including fish, insects, and crustaceans.

In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.

SLS can also be found in many common household products such as the “no tears” baby shampoo, feminine wash, dishwashing liquids, face washes and of course, toothpastes.

3. Fluoride

Yes fluoride is a toxic chemical.  Many people are probably aware that most toothpaste and many mouth rinses contain fluoride because that’s what dentists have recommended for years to prevent cavities. But did you know that most popular toothpastes contain enough fluoride to kill a small child?  There are warning labels if a child under 6 swallows a tube of toothpaste. Fluoride is the main ingredient in toothpaste and rat poison.

In children and youth, minimal ingestion of sodium fluoride causes salivation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Large doses of the carcinogen may cause paralysis, muscular weakness and convulsions, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure. It’s no wonder that fluoride can cause death in humans! In addition to being one of the main ingredients in toothpaste as well as rat and cockroach poisons, fluoride is also a key component in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs.

Now does this sound like a chemical you’d like to continue using?  Not me!

4. Diethanolamine (DEA)

DEA is found in many foaming products such as toothpaste. It’s a known hormone disruptor and can react with other ingredients to form a potential carcinogen called NDEA (N-nitrosodiethanolamine), which is readily absorbed through the skin and has been linked with cancers of the stomach, esophagus, liver, and bladder.

Oh, and don’t forget to look out for artificial sweeteners and artificial colour dyes.  I can just keep going with the list of toxic ingredients but I think you get my point.  Now, after reading about the most common toxins in your toothpaste or mouthwash, would you still continue using it?  If you’re like me, I’d definitely throw it in the garbage.  If you don’t care, then stop reading and good luck to you!

Jack ‘N’ Jill toothpaste is much loved by my two girls.  Getting them to brush their teeth became so easy because they just love the taste of these toothpastes!  We’ve tried the strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and blackcurrant flavours, but haven’t yet tried the banana.  I’m sure banana flavour will be a hit too!  Jack ‘N’ Jill toothpaste is natural, has certified organic flavours and has no toxic chemicals!!  The only negative review I will give, is that it tastes too good!  I’ve actually caught my girls eating it straight from the tube a few times and they love to put a big amount on their tiny little toothbrushes.  So just a warning to parents, to watch your kids to make sure they don’t eat it all, or to keep it out of reach to prolong its longevity. You can buy them at Nourished Life along with other great natural products.  Nourished life is store that sells personal care products that are toxin-free and safe for you and your family. Also check out the Jack ‘N’ Jill silicone toothbrush for baby’s first teeth. It’s soft and easy to hold, toddlers will love it!
